Ways to stay warm that don't involve turning up your HVAC thermostat

Tidelanders, let's talk about some ways to stay warm that don't involve cranking up your heating system's thermostat.

  • Layer clothing. Start with a snug fitting base layer of breathable fabric. Then add a thicker mid-layer that is non-restrictive. Finally your outer layer can be something like a jacket or sweater that you can easily slip on and off as your body temperature moderates throughout the day. And don't forget your feet. Wool socks should do the trick!

  • Use blankets or a heated electric throw to bring the heat to you rather than heating up the entire house. That's especially true for our seniors and folks struggling with health conditions like anemia, poor circulation, or those on blood thinners or undergoing chemotherapy.

  • Move! Turn off the TV, put on some tunes and have a family dance off. Pull out that game of Twister. Hit the treadmill. Or start your spring cleaning now. Vacuuming, mopping, cleaning out the pantry and reorganizing the linen closet are sure to warm you right up. And all that activity will help you sleep much better at night.

  • Consume hot liquids. Nothing better than a comforting bowl of soup, a hot cup of tea or even some broth for sipping.
