2024 Heat Pump Rebate Form (for purchases made between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024)
We are no longer accepting rebate forms for installations prior to 2024.
While not required, we encourage you to call us before proceeding with purchase for a consultation to make sure your home conditioning needs are met at the lowest possible cost. Call energy services manager Heidi Smith at 252-944-2410.
You MUST submit the HVAC installer's Manual J (system sizing) Calculation with the rebate form. If the HVAC contractor does not want to run a Manual J Calculation to properly size the system we recommend that you find another installer. The Manual J Calculation is the HVAC industry's own gold standard.
Once you've submitted the rebate request form and related documents, the co-op will issue an electric bill credit of:
Through 2032, there are generous federal tax credits that can help offset the cost of investing in a new heat pump. Click here to learn more. A state rebate program is also in development and we will share info when that becomes available.
The co-op does not provide a rebate for single mini-split HVAC units (such as units installed in a room over a garage or sunroom) but will issue one rebate if multiple mini-split units are installed to achieve whole house conditioning in lieu of a central HVAC system. The invoice and Manual J calculation should reflect the details of the mini-split installation.
See rebate forms above for additional terms and conditions.
This program is for heat pump installations only. Gas packs and central air conditioning systems do not qualify. Dual fuel heat pumps which are equipped with gas backup in lieu of electric resistant heat strips do qualify.
Heat pump rebates are limited to one (1) rebate per member household annually.
To help our members overcome the initial purchase and installation costs of owning a HPWH we offer a $300 rebate. You may also qualify for a significant HPWH federal tax credit through 2032. Details here. If you purchase a geothermal (water source) heat pump and include installation of a desuperheater for water heating you also may apply for the $300 rebate.
Note: We've received quite a few rebate forms for on-demand water heaters and standard storage tank water heaters. Those units do not qualify for the rebate. Here is a link to a heat pump water heater (for illustrative purposes only; this is not an endorsement of any particular manufacturer or retailer).
So if it’s time to replace your water heater, it’s time to consider the benefits of a heat pump water heater — the primary benefit being savings of up to 50%, or up to $3,500 over the life of your equipment, in water heating costs.
How They Work
Heat pump water heaters work like traditional air source heat pumps that heat your home in that they don’t actually make heat: They move heat from one place to another.
In essence, a heat pump water heater is like a refrigerator in reverse. Your fridge pulls heat from inside the cabinet and puts it into the room, leaving what’s inside colder. In contrast, a heat pump water heater pulls heat from the room and brings it into a tank to heat water. That's one reason why members especially love locating heat pump water heaters in their garage.
Is a Heat Pump Water Heater for You?
Maybe! There are certain space and location factors required for installation of a heat pump water heater. The units are generally taller and will require the installation of a condensate "drip" line. So it may not be ideal if you need to put the water heater under a staircase. The ENERGY STAR Water Heater Replacement Guide has lots of good information to get you started. You can also find and compare water heaters — and qualified installation contractors — in the ENERGY STAR database.

A word about tankless (on-demand) water heaters
Tideland does not offer a rebate for nor do we recommend the installation of whole house on-demand electric tankless water heaters due to the demands they place on our electric system during peak periods. Installation of an on-demand tankless electric water heater could also require upgrading your home's electrical wiring and increasing your distribution transformer size as well. On-demand tankless water heaters are also not maintenance free. They require a system flush every 12 to 18 months or more regularly if you have hard water. If you want to go with a tankless option we prefer that you go with propane. However, please note that energy savings associated with on-demand water heaters have largely been overstated since they generally result in increased hot water consumption due to their unlimited supply.
